I meant to respond to this earlier...
My husband's replacement WAS new. He received a full kit just like when we bought the original - USB cable, charger, and the newest instruction booklet; so it would not have surprised me if my replacement was new as well.
I've used my "new to me" Kindle everyday this week and have not had any problems, so, provided the letters don't fade like the old one, I'm hoping that means I'm in the clear.
