This statement on that linked page puts it quite in perspective:
"iOS 4.2 is the latest version of iOS for iPod touch (2nd generation)."
That is the end of the line for the 2G, so don't expect anymore major updates. And yes, if you type in the model number for my so-called 8GB 3G it is clearly listed as a 2G. (For some strange reason I kept my 1G and 2G touches after upgrading.)
