Yes, it's not the perfection, it's the blunder. Being right (in his work) is one of the few things Reacher values so I can accept that. Nobody's perfect and how you cope with failure is a good indicator of eventual success so Child introduces a blunder. It seems awkward. I pick up a book wondering what the blunder will be this time.

I was checking out the link you mentioned and came across a thread "A Little Reacher Fix". Deanie there found an Amazon page for Joseph Finder's Buried Secrets.
