I never thought I wanted an ereader... and them my library closed for renovations. It will be closed for a few years. I really needed free books! So I wanted a reader for library books. That ruled out the Kindle right away. I thought I would get a Nook, but when I looked at it in the store, it just looked big and clunky and outdated. It looked like they needed a new model. This was right around the time of the Nook Color announcement. I was hoping that announcement was going to be something more like the recent Nook Touch announcement. I knew I wanted e-ink so Nook Color was out. I had to look for something else. Couldn't get a Kindle, couldn't stand the Nook. That's what led me to the Sony. I was willing to pay a premium for it, just because I liked it better in my hands.
