I advoided the cases with elastic because I worried that the elastic would stretch over time or break.
I've seen pictures where there's an obvious point of impact right where the clasp's snap or magnetic closure would touch the screen if you were the close the case with the clasp between the cover and the device. If you were very conscientious about closing the cover well before putting it away there'd probably be no risk, but I'd be afraid of something shifting in my backpack, pulling the clasp away, then having it come slightly open, the clasp fall back in between, then close, then get squeezed... yeah, probably unlikely, but from the pictures I've seen it is apparently possible.
