If you don't have a pressing need to use the device outdoors, I agree that an iPad or one of the larger 10 inch Android Tablets is your best option.

An iPad or other Large Tablet with a high dots-per-inch resolution LCD screen, can work quite nicely for reading magazines if you set the screen brightness to an appropriate level for your reading area.

I personally think that the reading fatigue issue with LCDs is overstated.

Any screen based reader (eInk included) takes some getting used to, and many of the problems that have been reported are caused by folks trying to read from older, poor quality, low resolution devices, or setting the screen brightness too bright in a darkened room (or too dim in a brightly lit outdoor area).

When reading from a backlit screen, if you turn it down to an appropriate level, so that it's only a little brighter than the level of light reflected from a white piece of paper in the same viewing environment, then you should have much less of a problem with viewing fatigue.
