From the description you give it sounds as if there is some arcing in your power strip - maybe the switch or one of the plugs. I have seen a cable with moulded plug that had a broken wire inside that caused an arc but allowed enough current to pass to work the equipment - eventually it arced enough to melt part of the plug, so test all of yours.
