I don't have a Pocket eDGe yet myself, and the full-sized eDGe I do have uses a different trackball. Your trackball should be responsive once you see the home screen on the LCD side, and it really never should stop working.
You can submit a Help Request to Tech Support at
www.entourageedge.com/support and they'll look after you. While their response time is usually extremely fast, right now they're dealing with a flood of help requests from all these new Pocket eDGe owners, so please be patient
