Gingerbread is the version after 2.2 ("Froyo"), so in theory Gingerbread is as good as or better than 2.2.
However, there's actually a good reason we wouldn't want enTourage to switch gears and go to Gingerbread. Gingerbread is not yet publically available as of today (i.e., so enTourage can use it) and it typically takes a few months to adapt all the custom and system software to run on a new version of Android. Some will recall that enTourage originally (at the start of the year) planned and worked towards an upgrade to 2.1 in the summer, and apparently did what some people are now suggesting: ditch 2.1 and go with the 2.2 version when it became available somewhere in late spring or so. And look where we are now
dontpanic indicated in the recent Froyo Update thread that they are
well along on the 2.2 update but that it will still be a month or two, and I dare guess that this will come sooner than a Gingerbread update instead.
It also takes about at least a year (based on past trends) for an "old" version of Android to become effectively unsupported by the majority of new app releases, so 2.2 will be "useful" to the end of next year, I'm guessing.
Version upgrades, like new electronic devices, are like a neverending treadmill, and pity the poor hamster in it that is always chasing the next rung
