If Phillips makes $20 per DVD recorder they sell, vs $1 for every blank DVD, you can bet they're going to give preference to their blank DVD manufacturing if they ever have to make a choice between them.
Sadly, you've missed the point I was making entirely What the per-unit profit margin is is entirely irrelevant and I in no way intended to imply what the relative margins were. Indeed, they can be equal or reversed and my point still stands. It's the number of units sold. Secondly, it's not a DVD players vs blank DVDs analogy - it's a DVD player vs a different DVD player model analogy.

If you carefully re-read dontpanic's explanation (as I gather jsfiller just did), you'll understand that the issue is the performance drag of the larger screen. Android 2.2 works on both items, but slower on the significantly larger EE screens which requires more CPU cycles to update so many more pixels, especially for any kind of UI animations (perhaps this is something only a programmer can appreciate). It seems that enTourage has to tweak and optimize the code to more efficiently perform the screen updates.
