Shorter version: if one moves their library to external storage, then how much is left on the physical machine? What I mean is, if you transfer your SD card to another edge, is it like being close enough to being back on your machine again? I remember vaguely an older thread that some preferences were still stored on the machine, but I also remember someone writing their company was thinking of just using the machines as shells and everyone would have their own SD cards for their own use. A micro SD card + regular full SD adapter could be *like* sync if you just move the card from machine to machine.

But, totally agreed. I'd really want a way for the two devices to sync, especially for journal files which are only exportable (not copyable/moveable, right?) and for reading that I might start on one machine but then continue on another. It would be a lot easier to justify both if they worked together.
