Yep, I've since found out I'm a bit wrong - you can indeed download samples from mobipocket, and they're in a format you can stick on the reader, so you can make sure it looks alright and read the first few pages etc.
What I meant though was that the Kindle does it while you're not at the PC, i.e. when you're likely to be doing the reading.
