The eDGe is available for $499 at BestBuy.com. I believe enTourage has the higher $549 MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) higher so as to give retailers room to discount the price, and to let them attract the sales rather than enTourage.

If it were $100, even more people would buy it

Seriously though, I don't think more people would buy it at $399 because if the device is exactly what you're looking for, then $499 is not a bad price (just ask all the people who bought the device to date) for buyers in the US and Canada. If you're just looking for a reader, you'd be buying the dedicated single-function readers like the Kindle for $149.
