Ghosting seems to be a characteristic problem of eInk. I suspect with the optimizations and new features enTourage added to the Reader, they may need to tweak things a bit more in an update. You can use Refresh to clear the ghosting when you see it.
If the hinge of your eDGe has cracked, you should contact Tech Support first thing Tuesday (does the US have Labour Day Monday off?). I haven't heard anyone specifically mention it cracking, but I have heard one or two report what sounded like wires getting pinched within the hinge, resulting in strange lines/colours on the screens.
