What I'm wondering is if it can also open EPUBS protected by the Adobe system, since B&N uses the Adobe system (albeit with a variation secured by the customer's credit card).

The Actual Nook device can only read DRM protected epubs not purchased from B&N, if they are sideloaded through Adobe Reader. If you add those protected files directly to the Nook device, they are not seen.
I put a DRM protected book into the My Documents folder of the Nook reader, by copying, and although the nook reader sees it the app just closes if I attempt to read it.
