The PDF only becomes a image with the original and annotation file if you choose to save it as such and export it from the eDGe. If you simply keep the file on the eDGe (i.e., only view and edit it there), then you can have access to both the annotations and keyword search. I'm not sure whether it's possible to transfer the pair of files from one eDGe to another.
