I have the best results using the stylus even on the lcd. It's not perfect by any means, though. I am using Dolphin Browser instead of the default and it opens new pages in a new tab, making it easy to shut the ones that open by mistake. It is annoying, but the best I've come up with. Also, try to scroll where there is only text or blank space, like the edges of web sites. I've gotten better at navigating with the stylus and I don't open as many unwanted links as I used to.

For the scroll direction, it's like a piece of paper, pulling it down will cause the top to come into view, etc. It gets easier as you do it.
