AIM,
Orkut, Google Groups,
GMail, Yahoo Groups... the list goes on. When you're using someone else's services, you're kidnapped by whatever policies they decide to levy. These are probably the worse offenders.
But... there's always the
Gaim Encryption plugin, which I've been happily using for a year or two now.
You could also always choose to use
Jabber, and their gateway to the other IM services, if you wanted to wean yourself off of AIM directly.
