Yep, as far as I know, your Kindle needs to be registered to an account to at least allow you to organise your books in collections.

I don't recall them offering any other option when I registered. Paypal in definitely out. I've heard other users giving addresses not connected to them, or of real-life places in the US but I'm pretty sure Amazon's started to crack down on the practice.

Les Miserables has given lots of users lots of headaches. Piece of advice: you won't always find what you're looking for, and when you do, depending on where you live, you might come across the geographical restrictions' wall, so get ready to suffer some disappointments now and then.
