I've never encountered Kindle or iPod being used in the general way one says "Kleenex." About the only contemporary version of that phenomenon I've encountered is any and every Android phone being called a Droid, which seems to be on its way out. I suspect product cycles may move too fast these days for the emergence of "household names." I've heard people say of my Nook Color, "Oh that's one of those...like a Kindle?" because they weren't sure what to call the general class of devices (e-readers), but they knew in saying so that it was not a Kindle.

You're kidding around, but the absurdity of making that statement about a music player demonstrates how misguided it is to consider media "ecosystems" as a selling point. I'm not about to purchase a device or install a piece of software that makes it too great a burden to shop around, be it for books, music, software or video. I don't balk at purchasing files on one machine and transferring them to another, but if it's going to take more steps than that to use files from a retailer of my choice on your machine, I'm simply not buying your machine.
