Yes, there is a big difference between "obsolescence" and "I want the newest thing." A new version of something coming out in no way obsoletes an older version if that older version still does what you need it to do. There are Kindle 1 users happily reading away today.
Heck, my aunt's 486 Win 98 PC is still playing her one solitaire game just the way she wants it to. (I did insist she let me give her an LCD monitor last year, though.)
