Here is a short tutorial that you will need to know in order to deal with your two electronic readers, I have made this a simple as possible so if its a tad insulting please bare with me. All the books that you buy and/or download will be in one of several formats, most likely will be either PDF or epub format. Most electronic readers support both formats. PDF can and almost always contains what is referred to as DRM (Digital Rights Management) the determins which readers you can read the book on, when you obtain the books from Barns and Nobels the books will have DRM that will only allow you to read on a Nook (Nook Color or Simple Touch readers included), your Kobo will not read the books. However, if you obtain the books in epub format they should be readable by both your Nook and Kobo. Most electronic stores that you find on the internet will have epub books, and you probably should standardize on the epub format. The Kobo will be the simplier of the two to learn to use so you and your family should start learning to use the reader with that one then move to the Nook. Another strategy is to start the Nook with your daughter while mom and dad start with the kobo then trade when you get the hang of it (my neighbors son is more adept with technology then either of his parents are, as is the case with most kids) In the real world I am a network administrator so not being adept with technology is simply not an option with me. Start learning by uploading your books to the Kobo and Nook, sometimes called Side Loading then use the wireless option, called wifi.
As far as the Calibre goes look further for a small software program that fits inside the Calibre software (called a plug in) that removes DRM (called striping), download this and install it. In order of importance I think you should learn to first, strip DRM as it will be your major stumbling block, then second translate between different formats, this will not be as big a stumbling block as the DRM will be but will be great to know, and last library management, calibre's pimary job will be to manage all of those books that your family reads and keep track of them all.
