If you like historical action-adventure, the Richard Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell should be just your speed. It chronicles the adventures of a British rifleman during the Napoleonic Wars.
The series has gone on too long , but the first dozen or so are excellent.
It was later made into a TV series starring Sean Benn ( now starring as Ned Stark in the HBO miniseries Game of Thrones).
Bernard Cornwell's writing of battle scenes is superb-among the best I've read. He has written other series but I never got into them as much.
