I wonder if some of the confusion is that if you have ADE set as the default application to handle ePub, when you download a non DRM ePub and open it from the browser, that ADE displays the ePub, but does not add it to the library view.
It's not until you actually do an "Add to Library" that the ePub gets added to the ADE library.
This is as opposed to a protected ePub that when you open the associated ACSM file, ADE opens, downloads the ePub and adds it to the library.
