If I remember correctly, there was even a movie made about him too! I guess there is a big problem proving 'intent to desert.' We were told that if we did decide the military wasn't for us, to be sure NOT to leave our dog tags behind as that would be considered proof. If we took them with us, we could always say we were just taking some extra holiday time, and planned on returning... some day.
