Close enough! India passed the Wildlife Protection Act in 1972 to prevent the export of snakeskins. This law was then extended to ban ownership of serpents as well, so that snake charming is now illegal. There are still performers, but they must pay huge bribes to officials to allow their performances, making it no longer a profitable trade.
