Amazon won't delete your books without authorization. There were isolated cases and long time ago, mainly because legal issues (with the book) but that's past.
Having said that, it looks like a Sony or Kindle 3 fits the bill. If you read a lot of PDFs, I would recommend you a Kindle DXG because it is bigger for PDF documents hence, easier to read and use. But I honestly prefer a tablet for PDF documents instead of eink (more features and faster)
You should also look into Pandigital, but not sure about availability there in your area and customer support.
