This is probably a truism, comparing a book to a video, but I got the feeling that the story was more shocking on film. Admittedly I haven't read it through for a few years and it was always an adult read; I knew what was about to happen beforehand but watching it happen is appalling.

Last night the Hand's men were killed all around him and all around him were the smug faces of the people that betrayed him. Barristan was the only one who had the grace to be confounded by it. What happened to their society to bring them to such a state? What could anyone do in a world like that? Were Stark and his people dead the day they left Winterfell?

I guess I'd better re-read A Clash of Kings.
