The timing is going to be a bit tight for father's day but I think you might want to look very closely at the Nook STR: it has the newer pearl screen, touch, and side mounted paging buttons like your classic, plus a stylus, wifi, and an sdhc slot. That is pretty much a clean sweep of desirable features. And it lists for $139.

It also runs android 2.x just like the Nook Color (it sounds like color lcd is out, right?) which suggests it may quickly get hacked to let you install other reader apps, like Kindle, Aldiko, Coolreader, etc.
