In fact, the UK isn't really that badly off, as in the rest of Europe, if a Bank Holiday falls at the weekend, it is not moved to a week day, as it is here. See Wiki extract below:

Not sure why today is a holiday though. It's just known as the Spring Bank Holiday (to celebrate Spring - so it's raining today, of course...)
