I have lent the device to several friends when they wanted to try out reading electronically for a few weeks (months).

You can use Sony Reader even while charging.
I remember my Franklin Ebookman device. It was a good reader for its time, but it was a battery hog. Four hours after you put fresh batteries in they'd be dead and need recharging so I had to have a set of rechargable batteries always on hand to keep reading. It was too expensive to buy new batteries all the time so rechargable was the only way to go back then.
