That may not be the case. Bear in mind that the clock starts "ticking" on a lithium ion battery when it's manufactured. If you have a backup battery sitting in a drawer, it will be losing capacity every day in an irreversible chemical process.
It's a much better idea to buy a replacement battery when you need it, rather than buying one in advance, and storing it away somewhere.
