It is still better than my previous device. As long as the battery can hold longer than a couple of days of use it is still great as house-bound backup reader, or a reader you can lend your kid.
I have lent the device to several friends when they wanted to try out reading electronically for a few weeks (months).

It has been quite a while since I measured battery life, but I would say it is at least 5 days of light use.
You can use Sony Reader even while charging.
