Oddly enough, I watched a film last night about Dashiell Hammett without meaning to or realising it while watching.
I watched "Julia" knowing hardly anything about it (it's on a "to watch" list I chose randomly from). I didn't know it was based on anything true. In the film, the writer Lily had a mentor/lover named Dashiell. I thought it was an interesting coincidence.
Once the film was over, I wikipediaed it and discovered it was based on a portion of a Lillian Hellman book. As I read, calling it a "true" film may be a stretch given Hellman's penchant for lying and the circumstances surrounding the real "Julia", but there's no doubt about Dashiell being real.
