AAAARRRGHH! It is not "the Ukraine", it is "Ukraine". It is a country in its own right not merely a geographical area (e.g "the Sahara") or a collection of states (e.g., "the United States"). Do people say "the Uruguay" or "the Uzbekistan"? The use of "the" was a means of ambiguity used by both communist and czarist Russia to play down the fact that Ukraine was and is a totally different country..
