I understand your point, though I don't think that the comparison to browsing (where I have not made a contract w/ the content provider) and the Kindle is completely correct. None the less I'm sure many people agree with you.

My concern is that whether supressing the ads is reasonable or not, if jailbreaks are used to do that then
1) Amazon will become more agressive about breaking the jailbreaks and screen saver hacks, and
2) Amazon will begin treating jailbroken devices as out of warranty.

This will affect everyone.

Which brings me to recommending that people w/ jailbreaks strongly consider the update provider hack (I think that's what it's called ...)
