Unfortunately in the area that matters most to me is in books and content, B&N just don't seem to try to compete(aside from the Terrible 5 books)
So now I'm reading kindle books on nook hardware. Go figure.
The truth is both react to each other and the absence of one would be bad news for the consumer.

Amazon and Sony has a few years on B&N with their stores, and they're always looking for what customers want (I'm constantly clicking to get books on nook on bn.com). The difference is the everyday consumer* can get books from many other websites without problems if it is for some reason not on the nook.
I'm curious what other content you might be looking for. Not that they listen to me, but you never know when someone might wander through and listen to the little people on the totem pole.
*By everyday consumers, I'm meaning people who are not downloading and converting books. I've found most people who buy ereaders are NOT that tech savvy.
