"Reading time" has no measurable effect. How fast do you read? How many times you turn pages in that time? What if the font were set smaller?

As long as all the manufactures calculate the same way (or at least state how they calculate) then you can at least see that one reader has more or less battery life than another, regardless of if the numbers actually represent real use. Just like comparing EPA mileage values on cars. I may not get 35MPG out of the car, but if it claims 35MPG then I know it's more fuel efficient than one that claims 25MPG.
