I remember when the Nook was first offered and my local B&N store manager tried to convince me that the reason why I couldn't get a member discount was that B&N was already losing money at $249. My response was that Riggio is taking too much LSD if he believed that ebookers were going to believe that fairy tale. I also told the manager that I was looking to buy 2 devices but I'd rather pay $50 more for the Sony.
It was long after that when B&N dropped the price. I happen to see the store manager again and asked what the fairy tale was this time. He had no response.
I don't know what it costs to manufacture these devices, but I suspect selling them at $99 would in fact be selling them at a loss.
