I respect that, but in addition to "being gruff" we're also seeing a LOT of thread jacking behavior from certain people in the last few weeks. The combination of the two isn't appropriate, in my opinion.
Also, it's important to note that the person didn't say, "I'm a gruff teddy bear, deal with it", but rather something like, "if you had spent any time around academia, you'd be used to this", and that's (a) not true, and (b) implies that the people in question are unschooled (and therefore supposedly ignorant).
That's not something most people are going to appreciate, regardless of how much they don't mind gruff teddy bears.
