Actually, Bluetooth is up to around 2.1 mbps connection, while infrared actually can be as fast as 16 mbps. While it might be faster in your case (infrared tends to vary a fair amount, IIRC), infrared can be faster.
The main reason Bluetooth is currently preferred over infrared, is that it doesn't have to be lined up. infrared has to be basically direct line-of-sight, whereas Bluetooth can be anywhere within approximately 10 metres. Of course 802.11 is better than either in terms of speed (up to 54 mbps - 802.11g; up to 11 mbps - 802.11b), but I believe it does draw a fair amount more power.
