They locked the device to force people and buy from B&N market and use the device on their own world and rules. Of course, there is nothing wrong on that but for sure, B&N should not be happy with rooted device; they don't even honor the warranty if you brick it (yeah, yeah, most folks on B&N will never check or test, but still the warranty won't be cover if they can really prove it). They make money from their books, not only with the NC sales.

Of course B&N wants people to buy from their store. That is NOT the same thing as them being "affected" by people rooting their NCs.
The two issues have
nothing to do with one another - a NON-rooted NC can read non-B&N books just as easily as a rooted one can. The device is not "locked" as you say - what on earth makes you say that??? - you can load non-B&N books onto a non-rooted NC easily. Their website tells you how to do it, even!
There is also not a single documented case that I know of (a) a rooter bricking their device and (b) B&N refusing to replace the device. Heck, they've encouraged DEVELOPERS to root the device on the B&N developer forums.
B&N does not care if you root your NC. They have not attempted to lock buyers into their store. Any claim otherwise is ridiculous.
