It's absolutely fine to load your own docs onto a Kindle. I'm not sure what it is you've heard, but it's not true.

Sounds as if pretty much any device will meet your needs, but note that any eInk device needs to be treated with a certain amount of respect - the screen has a glass substrate which will break if twisted. So make sure you budget a good sturdy case into the case of your purchase.

I'm very happy with the Kindle, but there are lots of devices to choose from.
