A Thermomix is a $2k cooking machine that replaces most of your standard kitchen appliances (except the toaster). It was great for me moving from the US to Australia, as I had to switch from 110V to 220V - instead of purchasing all the appliances again, I just bought a Thermomix. Makes cooking from scratch easy - it can knead dough in 45seconds, chop a kilo of onions in 10 seconds, make risotto in about 20 minutes (heating, stirring)... I use it many times each day. I used to be scared of cooking anything more complicated than pasta, but it's too easy now. Thermomix is available in Canada but not the US (yet).
