Here's one I came across in my current reading (possibly a tiny clue in that): the Wolseley Motor Company was an upmarket British car marque for many years, surviving through various sales and mergers, linked with names like MG and Rover. It began life in 1901 as an offshoot of a company making something quite different, and in another part of the world. What did the original Wolseley company make, and in what country was it based?
