They don't work all that better on a nook from what I can tell.
If his sales are really small as his suggests, I doubt it's useful to draw any generalizations from a statistically insignificant sample.
For myself, though, I read on a Kindle, my wife reads on her iPod, and my son reads on a Sony, so when given the choice, I download epub rather than Kindle format and convert it for whichever reader it's going on. Especially among public domain and indie-created stuff, I seem to have better luck in general converting epub to mobi than the other way around.
