The origin of the 'library edition' lay in the fashion for Victorian stately homes to have a large and well-stocked library. Publishers would produce extensive handsomely-bound editions of the classics which would provide the nouveau riche industrialists with an impressive instant library. The volumes were seldom, if ever, opened, but the function of the books was merely to impress visitors with the erudition of the owner. Dunno what effect they had on blow jobs.
