I had the same problem with a large directory (thousands) of books, many of which were the result of scanning and OCR of my old paperback collection. They are in all kinds of formats and author/title arrangements, far too many to standardise.

Calibre did a couple of subdirectories, and then froze completely. After waiting an hour I gave up and terminated the program.

Also, of the books that did get into the database, many had the author and title switched, or one of the two missing entirely.
