There is some ancient wisdom behind it. It is more than just snacks and the number of calories consumed. It is tied to the way our body goes through the day circle, like what body needs when it wakes up vs., preparing to sleep.
The amount of calories is not the only factor for loosing/gaining weight. Far from as simple formula as 2000 kcal in, spend 2200 kcal and you loose weight.
For example you can eat 2000 kcal in two-three meals per day vs., 5 meals. The result would be quite different. It is more noticeable with age. When you are 23 years old...everything is fine. After you cross 30 years line, sometimes before that, you body changes a lot. You will see.
