I've always thought it was more a matter of degree myself. Everyone is self-absorbed to an extent in that we do like to toot our own horn and receive praise for our accomplishments, but the true narcissist takes it to an extreme where they are more important (in their own eyes) than others around them. It is prone to self-destructiveness I think as a result. In the actual myth Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection on the surface of a river and ended up drowning in the river as a result.
